Montfermeil is a commune in the eastern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 17.2 km (10.7 mi) from the center of Paris. Montfermeil is famous as the location of Thénardiers' inn in Les Misérables. It has made the headlines due to troubles in its social estate called "les Bosquets".
In 1818, Cosette is left in the care of the Thénardiers in their inn by her mother, Fantine. Cosette is mistreated and abused by the Thénardiers while tricking Fantine for money. Later, Jean Valjean arrives at Montfermeil, having been asked by the now deceased Fantine to take care of Cosette. He meets her in the woods alone in the cold, and helps her back to the inn. The day after, Valjean takes Cosette with him after paying the Thénardiers and heads to Paris. The inn later goes bankrupt.
