About[]
Magnon is a minor in Les Misérables. She is known primarily for a deceptive plot involving two young boys. Although she once had children of her own, they die young. However, Magnon continues to collect a financial allowance from Gillenormand, who she has convinced is the father of her children, and whom she was a former servant of. To maintain the illusion, Magnon conspires with Thénardier, who provides her with two boys of his to pose as her own. She is last heard of when a surprise police raid of her and Mamselle Miss's residence on La Rue Cloche-Perce, leaves both of them imprisoned and her two boys to fend for themselves.
She seems to know Éponine as well as Babet's mistress, as she passes a note about the Rue Plumet robbery to and from them. This also suggests an association with the rest of the Patron-Minette gang. She's mentioned to be living with a woman called only Mamselle Miss. In the novel's original manuscript she's referred to as La Brujon, suggesting a familial connection to Brujon and Brujon of 1811. It's unclear whether this extends to the canon of the finished novel, or only the manuscript. In the original manuscript, she is also shown to be involved in another scheme involving children, essentially "renting" the young Cosette from the Thénardiers to trick a welfare officer in to believing her to have a child, and therefore increasing her stipend. This scene is not in the final novel.
