Georges Pontmercy was the birth father of Marius Pontmercy. He was loyal to Napoleon and served distinction in the army. He does not appear in the musical or the movie. Col. Pontmercy died in the year 1827 AD (Hugo 620) of brain fever. (Hugo 621)

In the Les Misérables Novel, Hugo described Pontmercy as: "a man about fifty with a leather cap on his head, dressed in pants and jacket of coarse gray cloth, to which something yellow was stitched that had been a red ribbon, wearing wooden shoes, tanned by the sun, his face almost black, his hair almost white, a large scar on his forehead extending down his cheek, bent, bowed down, older than his years." (Hugo 606-607)

Service to Napoleon[]

Georges Pontmercy served with distinction under Napoleon Bonaparte. He held the rank of Colonel and was made a Baron by Napoleon "on the battlefield of Waterloo." (Hugo 622)
