Digne is the city where the first scenes of Les Misérables are set in, in which Jean Valjean travels through the city to reach Paris. After being denied sanctuary in most of the city's inns and taverns (due to his criminal past) he finds refuge in the city chapel, under the watch of Monsieur Myriel, who became bishop of Digne in 1806. It is said that Jean Valjean had been traveling from the Toulon for 3 days straight until he reached the city. From the moment when Jean Valjean repents and reforms, Digne does not appear for the rest of Les Misérables.

In some English versions of the book it appears as D--.
