Boulatruelle is a minor character. He is an ex-convict, his crimes unknown, but feared by the community. He is portrayed as a parallel to Jean Valjean, if perhaps Bishop Myriel never showed him kindness. He is introduced as a road-mender in Montfermeil who spends his life hunting for Jean Valjean's stash of bank notes in the woods. He is also implied to have known Jean Valjean. Later, he is an affiliate of the Patron-Minette gang and is involved in the Gorbeau ambush.
