'''Charles-François-Bienvenu Myriel''' is the Bishop of [[Digne]], a much admired clergyman whose great kindness and charity have made him popular throughout his parish. He passes on these same qualities to [[Jean Valjean]] and initiates the ex-convict’s spiritual renewal by saving Valjean from arrest for stealing his silver and making him promise to live as an honest man by giving him two silver candlesticks, telling him to repent, as he "purchased [his] soul and gave it to the Heavenly Father." Monsieur Myriel eventually passed away of old age. In the 2012 film, he appears at Valjean's death, replacing Eponine as Valjean goes to heaven.
